North America, USA, New Jersey, New York, Long Island, Hudson River, East River, Delaware, Delaware Bay, Connecticut, Yonkers, New York City, Hudson Highlands

Description: Reprint of Van der Donck's 1655 journal considered to be one of America's oldest literary treasures. Ethnohistorical research of the Hudson Valley peoples has traditionally been hindered by the loss of many Dutch records, especially from before 1647, and by the language barrier that the extant Dutch records pose to scholars with limited linguistic ability. Adriaen Cornelissen van der Donck was a lawyer and landowner in New Netherlands. In addition to being the first lawyer in the Dutch colony, he was a leader in the political life of New Amsterdam.
